ABOUT KATA DOJO
The number of coaches in a company, and especially their coaching ability, is a crucial factor in reaching challenging targets and making continuous improvement a habit. This is why many organizations have established the role of the 2nd Coach for observing coaching cycles and giving feedback to coaches. Unfortunately, we still see coaching skills develop slowly and even stagnating at times. This is where the Kata Dojo supports with a quicker and more effective approach.
Kata Dojo is a training setup that offers a deliberate way to develop new Coaches and continuously improve the ability of the established ones.
The 5 questions of the Coaching Kata offer a very good starting point for any one learning to coach. Never the less good coaching is always adapting to the answer of the person being coached. To do so the coach has to consider not only the content of the answer but also the implication based on the other persons perspective, ability and situation. This needs situational coaching skills beyond the Coaching Kata. To help the coach to obtain these skills we often use observation and feedback. In order to improve a coach not only hast to understand the feedback but also put it into action which needs repeated practice to gain fluency.
Unfortunately the situation a coach has received feedback for is very unlikely to re-occur in his next coaching cycles. By the time it appears again the coach might even have forgotten the feedback.
The Kata Dojo setup gives the coach an opportunity to practice the same situation in a coaching cycle over and over again through simulating and roleplaying specific situations in a coaching cycle.
